Florida Panther is the only subspecies of mountain lion that remains in the eastern U.S. It is considered one of the most endangered mammals on Earth. Today there are no more than 130 Florida panthers left in the wild. Hunting decimated the population badly, and it was one of the first species added to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) enacted by U.S. Congress in 1973. Due to human encroachment, habitat loss and many fatalities on roads, the Florida panther population continues to go down to this day.
