"Be Beast" Series
Shark. Many species of shark have become threatened because of shark finning. This practice consists of chopping off a shark’s fins and dumping the often-live animal back into the sea. No longer able to swim, the injured shark then drowns, bleeds to death, or is an easy target for other predators. Fins are required for the luxury dish called shark fin soup, which is deemed a delicacy and a symbol of status in Chinese culture. This soup is obligatory at upscale banquets, business dinners, and weddings. A pound of shark fin can cost up to $500.
