"Be Beast" Series
Polar Bears’ native range lies mainly within the Arctic Circle. The Arctic is warming at a rate twice as fast as the global average, causing the ice that polar bears depend on to melt away. Loss of sea ice also threatens the bear's main prey, seals, which need the ice to raise their young. Polar bears were listed as a threatened species in the U.S. by the IUCN in 2008. Sea ice melting is causing polar bears to not only die of starvation but also to drown—despite being considered outstanding swimmers—when they are forced to cross vast expanses of open ocean.
