"Be Beast" Series
Manatee. The three manatee species worldwide—West Indian, West African, and Amazonian— are listed as vulnerable to extinction. While manatees do not have any true natural predators, they have still become endangered mainly due to habitat loss, including destruction of or blockage of natural warm spring water they need to survive in the winter. Another cause of manatee decimation are boat strikes; a study by a nonprofit conservation group found that boat collisions killed at least 700 manatees between 2012 and 2018.
