"Be Beast" Series
Musk Deer live in the mountains of southern Asia, notably the Himalayas. It is listed as endangered by the IUCN because of overexploitation. They have been hunted for their scent glands, which are commonly used in perfumes. The glands—about the size of a golf ball and situated right in front of their penis—can fetch up to $45,000/kg on the black-market. The scent glands are harvested by killing the animal, and three or more musk deer may be killed before a male with a sufficiently large musk gland is caught.
