Elephants are the world's largest land animals and their numbers are dwindling. African elephants are listed as vulnerable and Asian elephants as endangered by the IUCN. In addition to shrinking habitats, the biggest threats to their populations is the ivory trade, as the animals are killed by poachers for their tusks—a single pound of ivory can sell for $1,500, and tusks can weigh up to 250 pounds. Carved ivory objects have historically been coveted in a variety of cultural economies, from musical instruments to decorative objects.
