Dusky Gopher Frog is a stocky mid-size frog with a loud and guttural call. Its natural habitats are temperate coastal forests and intermittent freshwater marshes. This species is endemic to the southern U.S. and is critically endangered. Nowadays it can be heard only in some of the pine forests of Mississippi, when once it was found all over Louisiana and Alabama. Their decline has been related to loss of open longleaf pine habitat needed for subsistence and the seasonal ponds needed for reproduction.
